Operational hospital needs

Resources needed for day-to-day work providing ground-breaking health care for people living with and at risk of HIV

Measurement & Evaluation: Support informed codesign and evaluation for programs and services. Investment for our measurement and evaluation work helps us monitor the effectiveness and impact of Casey House programs and services. Our advisory groups engage clients and ensure that their input and experiences are at the centre of our work and are rooted in an understanding of the needs and demographics of our clients.  This funding ensures that medical care is truly accessible, meets the needs of clients and honours who they are.

Research: Casey House collaboratively studies the care of people living with and at risk of HIV and contributes to knowledge and best practices in health care and health equity. We partner with leading academics and organizations to conduct research, generate unique insights, and transfer knowledge. Read more about our research here.

We see substance use as a health issue and strongly believe that harm reduction is an effective tool to help people stay as safe as possible. Our harm reduction programs include supervised consumption services for injection and inhalation, safer use supplies, naloxone to take home, condoms, and education about safer drug use, and overdose prevention/management. We distribute harm reduction equipment 24/7 with discrete and low-barrier access, in addition to our health management services facilitated by staff and peers with lived experience.

Blue Door Clinic provides free interim HIV health care and social supports for people who are not covered by publicly funded health insurance programs or who are precariously insured. The program is provided collaboratively with community partners, learn more about Blue Door Clinic here.

Casey House also covers the cost of lab tests and medications for a small number of clients who have no health insurance.

Peer Program: Help provide peer support for clients. The philosophy behind meaningful engagement of lived experience is to value knowledge borne from experience. This wisdom provides diverse perspectives and skills, meaningful opportunities for peer connections, and strengthens Casey House’s commitment to GIPA/MEPA. Peers work directly with clients to provide support, advice, and company for medical appointments.

Peers also develop skills and gain experience as they pursue future employment.

Volunteer services: Volunteers are an essential part of Casey House and contribute enormously to clients’ health and well-being. The commitment, dedication, generosity and selflessness of volunteers helps us deliver on our promise of transforming lives through compassionate care. Support the recruitment, coordination and celebration of volunteers who assist in the hospital’s vital work. Interested in becoming a volunteer? Learn more here.

Client care and comfort: Invest in a fund that provides what clients need. This could be a toothbrush and toothpaste, underwear, menstrual supplies, pajamas, socks, lip balm, or razors. Or it could be a repair to a medical device, emergency dental care, a government administrative fee for replacing ID, specialized medical testing or a treatment Casey House doesn’t provide.

Meals and snacks: We believe in food as a fundamental pillar of health care. Help us hand out snack packs for clients and community members, and provide food supplies for cooking and nutrition programs.

Child care: Subsidize child care for HIV+ parents while they attend to their health, whether it’s medical appointments, group sessions, educational workshops, or hospital care.

Local AIDS service organizations can access this funding for parents with children under the age of 12, removing one more barrier to achieving their health goals.

Care for the Caregiver: Help us maintain a culture of diversity and inclusivity and celebrate staff milestones to create a culture of meaning and belonging for our team at Casey House.

Staff development: Support staff education and training for capacity building, quality improvement, and professional development.

Help Casey House provide accessible HIV education such as seminars and webinars for a broad range of service providers working with clients living with, affected by or at risk of, HIV and complex health needs.  Learn more about our education programs here.

Smash Stigma awareness campaigns: Support award-winning and creative campaigns. Since 2017, Casey House has been bringing awareness to the issue of HIV stigma with a multi-year awareness campaign and the call to action #smashstigma. We break down misconceptions and reignite conversation around HIV stigma, while empowering people to open a dialogue about some of the challenges they encounter living with HIV. Learn more here.

Advocacy: Help Casey House advocate for compassionate and socially-just health care while addressing structural barriers that prevent optimal health. We build relationships, educate, and advocate for changes to public policies on issues that impact people living with and at risk of HIV. Learn more about advocacy at Casey House here.

Capital projects

Large-scale multi-year projects that maintain or build upon existing infrastructure and require substantial initial costs in addition to long-term investment.

Invest in a new electronic medical records system (EMR) for Casey House, which will provide transformative tools for care delivery, client engagement and clinical decision-making. The new EMR will deliver significant benefits to clients and clinical teams, including:

  • Real-time access to information: health care professionals able to make more informed decisions with instant access to critical client data.
  • Improved client engagement: clients can easily access their health records, empowering them to take a more active role in their care.
  • Enhanced clinical decision-making: clinical team will be equipped with advanced tools to deliver precise care more efficiently.

“Collaborating [to] bring Epic to Casey House is a game-changer,” said Joanne Simons, CEO of Casey House. “It’s a vital step forward in enhancing care quality, improving outcomes and ensuring safety for our clients.”
