Heather remembers fondly the fun she had spending time in queer bars in The Village during the late 1970s and 1980s. When the AIDS crisis began in Toronto, many people in her social circle were impacted. Years later, when she was looking for an organization to support, she says that it was a “no brainer for [her] to choose to volunteer at Casey House.”
Heather has been volunteering at Casey House since 2008, when she began assisting Casey House Foundation. She would spend every Thursday morning for the next five years assisting with administrative work in the former “Coach House” building. Her first impression was that this was a special place.
These days, you can find Heather serving and assisting clients during lunch. Here, she appreciates the jovial and upbeat team. Between the staff, volunteers, peers, and clients, Heather says it’s always a fantastic feeling to be a part of the community during the lunch service. Even from the start of her 11 a.m. shifts, there are always lots of laughs to be shared in the dining room. She deeply enjoys getting to know the clients and building a rapport with them. Spending time at Casey House has made Heather feel hopeful that folks from systemically excluded populations will be able to find care and support in the community.
Heather follows a personal mantra of, “if you can help, then help.” With that, Casey House thanks you for an incredible year of helping, Heather!
